After a full career in elementary education, Laurie Alsobrook has found a perfect blending of her two passions, teaching learners and playing the dulcimer.

Laurie has participated in a variety of festivals, online and in-person.  Festival credits include QDF, Black Mountain, Nonsuch, Dulcimer U, NGFDA, Dutchland, and Dulcimer Daze.  She also served as co-host/organizer of the Stephen Foster Dulcimer Retreats, digital and in-person events.   

Laurie has been a regular contributor to the Send in the Music Virtual Jam, offering tab to the participants and serving as a song leader. She also hosts a weekly more informal zoom jam.

Laurie and her friend Jean prepare weekly videos of jam tunes from two of her collections NO FRILLS. Those videos are shared on Saturday’s Send in the Music session and then uploaded to YouTube.

Did you know there’s a weekly beginner’s dulcimer session at Melrose Center on Wednesday mornings? You’ll usually find 10 or 12 of us gathering there. These three took over when I could not be there following shoulder surgery in March 2023 – Such confidence…I love it!!!

One of these students is Ginny, who has the unique ability to turn anything into limerick. Here’s one for our group…

“In Melrose, music’s her game,

Though often she won’t give her name.

When we ask why

She’s been known to reply

“Just call me ‘That Dulcimer Dame!’”

I think I see a t-shirt in our future! hahahahaha!

I am willing to come to your club!  Here is a list of a few of my fun theme-based workshops.  In addition to the fun collection of songs, the workshop participant will receive specific instruction on use of chord/melody playing, using a capo, and using a variety of techniques to smooth out playing.  Content within each workshop offering may be modified for the level needed.
